Maria

Angelina Jolie plays opera diva Maria Callas, who is living in Paris and hasn’t sung in 4 years. This film spends time with her as she reflects on her past and contemplates her life, while attempting to sing again. Pablo Larraine, who has directed similar studies of 2 other iconic women, Jackie & Spencer, once again goes into deep emotional states and painful conflicts as he examines her final days. Jolie is mesmerizing in the depth and power she brings to the role (although they didn’t make much effort to match their looks). I’m not a fan of opera and there are several arias that are performed (most in flashbacks). While Jolie is impressive, it’s still a lot of opera. The rest of the time, she majestically moves around her apartment at a pace that’s often deadly quiet. Fans of the diva will enjoy this reverential paean. I appreciated the artistry and Jolie, even thru the tedium.  2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
