Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Donald Glover & Maya Erksine plays spies who are assigned to become a married couple. Obviously, this starts out awkwardly before their relationship becomes romantic. Unlike the original version that starred Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie as glamorous and sexy, this duo is played more for mildly quirky. Actually, that’s what the creators were going for this time: Less action and more character comedy. There’s at least one hurried, but unexciting action beat in every episode, but the rest of the time is spent with them in conversations and conflicts. Fortunately, Glover handles the off-hand comments well and Erksine (best known as the bowl-cut middle schooler in PEN15) adds her sly moments too. Even so, the writing isn’t especially witty and the situations are rather bland, so outside their occasionally charming personalities, there’s not much to make this worth watching. (Eight one-hour eps). 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)
