Nickel Boys

The photo that accompanies this review is the only time in the movie when you see both of the protagonists together. In an unusual approach, director RaMell Ross has chosen to shoot this film from the point of view of these 2 boys, primarily during their time at a Florida boy’s reform school. (Based on the real Dozier School for Boys and the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead). This film is experimental and experiential. Not only does the unique POV offer interesting visual insights, there are also non-narrative montages on seemingly random subjects. Being shot from their viewpoint amplifies their encounters, but the standout performance is Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, as the supportive grandmother. She brings an emotional aspect to the project. Speaking of, this objective approach does keep the viewer at a distance much of the time. Even so, the outcome ultimately makes a powerful statement. 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
