One movie starring Nicolas Cage is currently playing at Movieland (my review) and I caught 2 that were recently added to streaming services. One is pretty terrible and the other isn’t as bad. (Maybe he’ll have a chance to break out of his low-budget bad-movie rut with his portrayal of Joe Exotic of Tiger King fame.)
Grand Isle Nicolas Cage and his sultry wife lure a hunky young man into their home during a hurricane. All manner of suspicion and seduction ensues. The narrative unfolds via flashback interviews with a local detective (Kelsey Grammar unintentionally hilarious doing his best Tennessee Williams character). The Byzantine plot keeps trying to surprise, but the inevitable encounters are mostly predictable. Cage is acting like crazy (pun intended) and the others do fine. The direction manages to squeeze some mild tension here and there, but not nearly enough to make it worthwhile. (2.5 / 5)
Available on numerous streaming services (some free)
Jiu Jitsu This is a strange mash up of martial arts and space invader. A crew of expert fighters takes on an almost invincible creature that plagues Earth every 6 years when a comet passes overhead. Cage plays the wizened father figure who dispenses wisdom and occasional humor. Other than that, it’s almost non-stop battles, which could be fun if they weren’t so bland in execution and originality. Anyone who can identify any of the stars other than Cage will probably enjoy seeing this lineup of luminaries whacking away. (2 / 5)
