Amy Adams plays as an unhappy stay-at-home mom who suddenly finds weird tufts of hair, a craving for meat and a pack of dogs treating her as the Alpha. This is not a typical werewolf horror flick, but a drama surrounding the challenges of motherhood, including sacrificing her career for her son. The gradual transition takes much of the movie, so it’s not about her constant metamorphizing to track down prey. As she realizes her change, the drama delves into her reaction to personal issues. The child who plays her son (actually twins Arleigh & Emmett Snowden) is one of the cutest and charming kids lately on camera. Director Marielle Heller (most notable for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”) focuses on the inner and outer conflicts this woman faces and Adams does a compelling job in the role. Even so, the film is not a thriller, but a drama about a mother coping with life and a weird new development. (3 / 5)
