Writer/director Robert Eggers has created this creaky version of the classic Dracula story. Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult and Willem Defoe head the cast with an unrecognizable Bill Skarsgård as the vampire. They all act in the stylized manner appropriate of a 18th century recreation, so realism is never an option. Of course, Eggers has jiggered with the plot to add his own sinister twists, but he never manages a soup·çon of terror. The cinematography and art direction are appropriately gothic and often attractive. Eggers’ approach is all style and no scares. (2 / 5)
