John Cena returns in the titular role he originated in The Suicide Squad (my review). This series jumps in while he’s still recovering from the injuries in that movie. When he finally gets home, he ends up being “convinced” to ally himself with a new group whose mission is to eliminate Project Butterfly. James Gunn, who wrote/directed both Gardians of the Galaxy films, plus The Suicide Squad, is back at the helm and there are hints of his irreverent, wacko style. So far, it’s not as wildly “out there” as the movies, but there are sassy moments, brazen fights and flawed heroes. Cena’s comic abilities help. The newest visit it the DC Comics Universe doesn’t start out as raunchy or silly, but by the 3rd episode it’s starting to gain that fun momentum. (Review based on the 1st three episodes) (3.5 / 5)
