Peter Pan & Wendy

The story and previous iterations are familiar territory, so this new one takes a more dreary…even woke approach. The 3 Darling children are whisked away to Neverland by Peter, but instead of carefree fun and childlike freedom, there’s continual danger. Captain Hook’s part has been juiced up, possibly because Jude Law is in the role, and he’s created a dark, mean-spirited character without any of the eccentricity that we’ve come to cherish from the role (he even has some mental health drama). In another nod to modern sensibilities, Tinkerbell expresses her assurance at “being heard.” Ditto the rest of the movie. It’s going for a dark adventure instead of a delightful escape. Sure, there are fantastical visuals, but that’s not enuff anymore. Parents looking for a lively “flight” are liable to find it bleak and anyone looking to revisit the joys of earlier versions will be sadly sad. 1.5 out of 5 stars (1.5 / 5)
