Road House

Even thought they play bouncers, this story is different from the original version starring Patrick Swayze. This time Jake Gyllenhaal plays a UFC fighter who’s hired to help keep peace in a Florida Keys bar (actually shot in the Dominican Republic). Meanwhile, the inevitable bad guys have other plans. While the plot is totally transparent, it’s the action that makes this a rousing standout. There’s a gritty presence that puts viewers in the middle of some pretty impressive stunts. Gyllenhaal seems to be enjoying creating a personable character who can easily whip anyone’s ass. His delivery sometimes brings a smile, but it’s Arturo Castro, as one of the bad guys, who adds an occasional comic accent. One thing that’s held over from the original is the constant live music playing at the club, which adds a rockin’ backdrop. Ultimately, it’s Doug Liman whose dynamic direction brings the action to a new level of intensity (also on his resume Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity and Edge of TomorrowI). The plot and characters are as thin as Gyllenhaal’s newly-shredded waist, but the fights are what makes this fun to watch. 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
