Sister Act (review)

THE PLAY: This is based on the hit movie about an aspiring disco diva who accidentally witnesses a murder and has to go “incognegro.” She ends up in a convent, where her style is a shock, but her musical talent transforms their choir.

THE PRODUCTION: This is what a Broadway tour should be: mighty voices, enjoyable comic characters, snappy pacing and GOOD SOUND! The humor is broad, but the cast isn’t afraid to go over the top for laffs. Every singer is strong and the 5-piece orchestra sounds great. Once the choir kicks in, the musical numbers rock the room. The costumes and sets are relatively mundane until the cathedral: then the color and splash liven up the visual appeal.

THE POINT: This is an old-fashioned musical in a modern package. Nothing innovative, but upbeat, comical and broad audience-pleasing fun!
