Skincare

Elizabeth Banks plays a popular Hollywood aesthetician who’s about to launch her own skincare line (supposedly based on a real person). When a rival facialist (Luis Gerardo Méndez) moves across the street, things start to get weird and even dangerous. Enter intriguing new friend (Lewis Pullman) to help her. Banks runs the gamut of emotions in this role, creating a compelling-but-flawed person, while Pullman creates an interesting take on a sketchy character. It’s not clear from the beginning that this will turn into a dark story of paranoia and sabotage. The film seems to spin its wheels for a while, but once the plot thickens, so does the tension. It’s never a thriller and sometimes goes in weird directions, but the ultimate outcome proves surprisingly effective. 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
