Station Eleven

Even though it’s taken from a 2014 novel, this post-apocalyptic series has uncomfortable parallels to our current situation. It starts in Chicago when some sort of virulent virus is sweeping the world. Most of the subsequent action takes place 20 years later, centered around a troupe of actors and musicians who work a circuit. Natch, there are flashbacks and several other character situations that develop. The series starts with a compelling scenario and manages to keep interest until the plague is over. Then, it’s a lot of talking, some of which is interesting and some just drags on. The performances, led by Mackenzie Davis, are fine, but it’s another of those shows that forsakes cool or interesting futuristic concepts for interpersonal drama (their lack of electricity and other basics echoes The Walking Dead). From what I’ve seen in the first 4 shows, there’s nothing to keep me piqued. (10 one-hour episodes released thru 1/13) 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
