If you’re expecting this to follow the action path of Liam Neeson’s Taken series, you’ll be disappointed. This is more of a character study/relationship drama. Matt Damon plays an Oklahoma roughneck who travels to Marseille, where his daughter is in prison for a murder. His character deals with the cultural differences, while struggling with his own relationships. Damon beautifully plays this man who displays little emotion, while letting us see thru the cracks. The rest of the cast is equally outstanding. While there are a few moments that push credibility to complete the crime angle, the complex combination of legal/personal issues/encounters is compelling. Director Thomas McCarthy has fashioned a notable drama about family that never loses interest, even at the 2:20 running time. One interesting side note: This gruff dad’s character has no problem with his daughter being a lesbian.
