Most people are familiar with the title character of this series as the shifty young pickpocket who befriended Oliver Twist in the Dickens novel. This finds him (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) as a talented surgeon working in the penal colonies in 1850s Australia. Before long, his “mentor” in crime, Fagin (David Thewlis), shows up to encourage him back into a shady business. This jaunty series alternates between his unlawful exploits, his impressive accomplishments as a surgeon (with some bloody operations) and his attraction to the Governor’s smart daughter (Maia Mitchell). Brodie-Sangster deftly holds his own against Thewlis’ charmingly naughty characterization. Their escapades have a snappy pace and interesting supporting characters, including the evilest of villains (Damon Herriman). The enjoyable cast and adroit adventures combine to create an enjoyable period escapade. (3 / 5)
