The Big Leap

Don’t be misled; this is NOT a reality show, but a fictional series about a show that assembles a group of contestants to perform Swan Lake.  The cast is made up “regular” folks, each with their own personal issues. The early episodes start with the backstory of one of the characters, then explores on how their early experience has shaped their attitude. There are compelling stories from many of the characters, but what’s the most fun is the behind-the-scenes conflicts, the lineup of offbeat characters and watching the creators struggle produce the show. One other enjoyable aspect is the addition of several great spontaneous dance numbers in a variety of locations. Luckily, the choreography is always inventive and exuberant, especially when Justin (Ray Cham) has moments to shine with his cool style and incredible moves. The final few episodes do lean a bit heavy on the TV drama heartstrings, but there’s still plenty of comedy and enjoyable relationships to make this a delight. NOTE: Despite the shameless 2nd season plugs in the last 2 shows, a follow-up season has not been announced.  4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
