This compelling character study revolves around Tom Hardy, who plays a quiet, tentative bartender. He works in a Brooklyn bar run by local gangsters and owned by his cousin (James Gandolfini in his final role). An ominous atmosphere of menace pervades this world (and the soundtrack). Even though the events unfold slowly, watching the people interact never drags. Hardy has disappeared inside his role, creating a character who’s unassuming, sweet and a little bit scary. He’s exceptional and the main reason to see this dark film.
