In 1961, a 60-year old taxi driver (Jim Broadbent) stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. His character didn’t do it for money, but to help provide free BBC to the elderly (Brits actually paid for the service until 2000). His charwoman wife is played Helen Mirren, working a frumpy look and crusty attitude. While the story is pretty straightforward, the film’s pleasant attitude and enjoyable performances help re-create a warmhearted little piece of history. (3 / 5)
