Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy play sharpshooters who are assigned to guard opposing towers that overlook this massive, mysterious gap. They’re not supposed to communicate, but the couple ends up in an unlikely relationship. This is a sci-fi story, so it’s necessary to allow some credibility issues, but looking past that is a film that serves as a romance and an adventure. Fortunately, the chemistry between the actors keeps them interesting with Taylor-Joy creating a cool, enjoyable character. Teller plays it mostly stolid (hoping to boost his leading-man cred). On the other side, director Scott Derrickson has staged the action scenes with noisy effectiveness (some of that noise may be from the soundtrack by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross). This belongs on the big screen. The expansive location and the big sequences would benefit from a bigger platform, but even on a streamer, this film is enjoyable popcorn entertainment. (4 / 5)
