Uma Thurman plays an art gallery owner who’s struggling to pay the bills. In comes a baker (Samuel L. Jackson) with a plan to launder money thru fake paintings. All they need is an artist, which is where the hired killer comes in (Joe Manganiello). When his work becomes a sensation, it presents problems for the “laundry” business. The film’s title could lead viewers to expect murder and suspense, but this is really a send-up of New York’s art scene. Thurman borders on chewing the scenery with her hopped-up desperate snob, but she turns out to be the best thing about the movie. Jackson’s typical irreverent, cussing character provides the only moments of levity, while Manganiello gets serious. Supporting roles from Jennifer Kim, Amy Keum and Debi Mazar add “character.” Those looking for thrills from the kills will be let down, but this smart, sassy satire makes the art world look positively criminal.
NOTE: In stunt casting, the snarky owner of a competing gallery is played by Maya Hawke, daughter of Thurman and Ethan Hawke.
