In 2006, Bhutan was the last country in the world to get internet access. In an attempt to modernize, the King abdicated and the country set out to create a democracy. This film is set during that time, when election officials traveled to rural areas to explain voting. Meanwhile, a young monk is assigned to find a gun for his lama. This glimpse into the culture of the country is the movie’s most interesting asset. The secondary story about an American seeking a special gun adds a Western angle to the narrative. The inhabitants and their relationships are presented with gentle affection and the country’s attempts to create elections present a fascinating insight into another society. Although not a riveting drama, this film manages to appeal with sweet, modest charm. (3.5 / 5)
