The Monk and the Gun

In 2006, Bhutan was the last country in the world to get internet access. In an attempt to modernize, the King abdicated and the country set out to create a democracy. This film is set during that time, when election officials traveled to rural areas to explain voting. Meanwhile, a young monk is assigned to find a gun for his lama. This glimpse into the culture of the country is the movie’s most interesting asset. The secondary story about an American seeking a special gun adds a Western angle to the narrative. The inhabitants and their relationships are presented with gentle affection and the country’s attempts to create elections present a fascinating insight into another society. Although not a riveting drama, this film manages to appeal with sweet, modest charm. 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
