Rob Zombie has written and directed several horror films, but his skills are never especially impressive. This latest effort serves as an origin story for the cast of the popular TV show. The familiar characters are back, but other than Jeff Daniel Phillips who’s a bit zany as Herman, their performances are rather flat. The gags are weak and there’s nothing remotely amusing. The broad style that’s supposed to echo the series is trying too hard and feels dumb. Kids may find this fun, but anyone hoping to savor the past will be “gravely” disappointed.
