After his wife is brutally murdered by Wild West outlaws, Nicolas Cage’s character sets out for revenge with his daughter (Ryan Kiera Armstrong). The scant action scenes are decently staged, but what holds this film back is the continual drop of long monologues. They happen several times and not only do they slow down the momentum, but they don’t add anything to the narrative. Cage does his usual threatening dead-eye delivery and Armstrong possesses plenty of pluck. There’s virtually nothing about this movie that’s original and it might have been a bit more bearable if it stuck to Western tropes instead of dramatic monologues. (2 / 5)
