The Origin of Evil

When a woman who packs sardines for a living finds herself homeless, she contacts a rich man claiming to be his daughter. Thus begins a web of secrets and betrayals that involves every member of the household and beyond. The luxury setting is filled with collectibles, including many stuffed animals, that make a statement about the cold, self-indulgent humans who live there. All of the performances are interesting, even if there’s not much backstory for them. What keeps the film so compelling is the continually shifting loyalties. It could lose some of the “atmosphere” padding that doesn’t push the plot and the sometimes weird music adds to the discomfort. Ultimately,  the elements of production merge to make it a fascinating story of deceit. (French with subtitles) 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
