The Other Black Girl

“This is some Get Out shit.”
That’s a line spoken by the protagonist halfway thru this series, which hints at the potential ambiguity to come (and if you’re clueless, refers to Jordan Peele’s race-themed sci-fi thriller). Ashleigh Murray plays the only Black employee at a New York publishing house, when the titular character shows up (Sinclair Daniel). They bond over their sisterhood, but something seems amiss. The initial issue around a new book presents challenges that resonate thru the rest of the series. The first episodes roll along with smart dialogue, interesting characters and intriguing situations. The second half delves into the more sinister angles of the story, which loses a bit of its pace and edge. Even so, Murray and Daniel are compelling as they navigate their friendship and potential success. There are some potent messages about systemic racism, but the bigger picture of relationships makes for an engaging watch. 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
