The Surfer

You can never trust a trailer. This one frames the movie as a revenge thriller, but it’s not. It’s a sort of psychological character drama with a touch of tension. Nicolas Cage plays a dad who takes his son (Finn Little) to surf at his boyhood beach. Turns out a group of local bullies causes him to spiral into a mess. Even though Cage’s character frustratingly continues to defy reason, the actor seems to relish the fun of depicting this guy’s slow deterioration. Director Lorcan Finnegan tries to keep the tension by adding creepy nature closeups, dramatic music and unusual shots. They seem more heavy-handed (with echoes of 70s flims) than disturbing. If you’re able to let go of any preconceptions and see where this leads, you’ll be in for another unusual performance from Cage packaged in a unique scenario. On the other hand, you could find the whole thing, including Cage, irritating. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
