The Zombie Life

THE PLAY: This world premiere is staged as a seminar, where humans who have not yet converted to zombies can hear about the experience from those who have.

THE PRODUCTION: The play posits that the best way to escape the pains of existence is to erase it all and become a mindless zombie. To expand on that, the “converted” are handed objects that cause them to flash back to human situations for deeper exploration. Although the concept is creative, Chris Gavaler’s script often gets in the way. It’s feels academic and sometimes obtuse, more about the philosophies behind the concept than a focus on theatrical or emotional accessibility. Director Joan Gavaler (Chris’ sister) manages to create some interesting movement moments, but still couldn’t coax a cohesive dramatic structure out of it. It doesn’t help that the cast is uneven: Some of them create believable characters, while others are wooden or acting too hard. The black curtain wall and other tech elements fall in line with the stripped-down seminar vibe. Running time: 1:15 (no intermission)

THE POINT: While the concept had potential, the confusing script and uneven production hamper its successful realization. 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)

At Firehouse Theatre thru 8/29
