Here are 3 very different crime shows that are currently airing on broadcast TV, cable or streaming.
Your Honor
You may remember all the hype over HBO’s The Undoing, as a twisty-turny murder drama. It pales to the gripping tension that envelopes every episode of this show. Bryan Cranston (who was just nominated for a Golden Globe for this performance) plays a New Orleans judge, who gets in deep while trying to protect his son (Hunter Doohan) after a hit-and-run. In addition to exceptional performances, the taut direction and intricate plotting keep every minute of this show laden with anxiety. The final moments of the final episode deliver one last jolt. (It was adapted from an Israeli show Kvodo.) (5 / 5)
Big Sky
The latest from David E. Kelley revolves around a kidnapping ring and the private detectives (Kylie Bunbury & Katheryn Winnick) who try to solve it. Since this is broadcast TV, you can expect a sensational approach and this one delivers. Even so, there’s not a lot of unneeded personal dramas, just the hunt and the hunted. There are surprises, but it’s the twisted mind of one of the villains (Brian Geraghty) that explores the darkest elements. (Based on the books by C.J. Box.) (4 / 5)
The Investigation
This limited series from Denmark is based on a true crime, and it’s told strictly from the POV of the detectives working the case. There’s also no suspense and scant emotional involvement. Every detail is poured over in this massive inquiry, as they try to build a case before the suspect is allowed his freedom. As such, it’s a very dry procedural. So dry, there’s not even the obligatory alcoholic cop. It’s much more methodical than sensational…it is Scandinavian, after all. (In Danish with subtitles) (3 / 5)
