Three Thousand Years of Longing

George Miller is best known for his Mad Max films, so this unusual tale is a big departure from that style. Tilda Swinton plays an academic who attends a literary conference in Istanbul and discovers a magic bottle that contains a genie or a Djinn, as they’re called in this tale (played by Idris Elba). Thus begins what’s basically a two-hander, where he relates tales of his journey thru several thousand years and two relationships. These flashbacks provide breaks from their hotel-room discourse. Her character basically gets to listen, while he spins his stories. Even so, both actors bring their captivating talent to give the characters life and depth. Miller has crafted a somewhat sweet fantasy that’s quietly examines storytelling and romance. 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
