Time Bandits

Terry Gillam’s 1981 film has been revived by the creative team of Jermaine Clement, Iain Morris and Taika Waititi. It follows the titular group of ragtag thieves on their adventures with an 11-year-old history buff from our current time/place (Kal-El Tuck). Each episode takes them to a different era from pre-historic times to Prohibition. Leading them (and making the best comic impression) is Lisa Kudrow, who’s undeniably the humorous center of this series. Toss in some amusing character moments from Clement and Waititi. Director Waititi (who set the tone with the first 2 eps) has infused the series with his unique voice that also beautifully echoes the original deadpan absurd Monty Pythom esthetic. While the first eps romp along, the series also attempts more heartfelt moments and some detours that slow things down. So far, this series launches with lively comic potential and hopefully, the final shows will continue that trajectory. (Review based on 6 of 10 one-hour eps) 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
