True Detective

Jodie Foster and Kali Reis assume the title roles, as they investigate the shocking murder of a group of men in the frozen Alaska night. The case is full of creepy portent and some frozen herrings. Even when it’s over, there’s still some confusion. Of course, there’s some examination into their personal lives to add more heft to their issues. Foster goes for a brittle, stern sheriff, while Reis suffers effectively. The most outstanding aspect of this series is the beautiful cinematography, often capturing a snow-laden landscape with dazzling light (almost the entire show takes place in the dark of night). While the murder case is sometimes compelling, the solutions push credibility and getting there sometimes proves frustrating. (Review based on 6 one-hour eps). 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
