True Story

Like many comedians, Kevin Hart wants to be taken seriously as an actor and this is his first foray. He plays a megastar comic/actor (loosely based on his real life) whose brother (Wesley Snipes) gets him embroiled in murders and more. The first episode has 2 shockers and subsequent installments continue to twist the tension screw even tighter. Hart exhibits a skill for serious work, even though he’s given a few too many dramatic monologues. Pair him with Snipes and the rest of the excellent cast and that adds to the effectiveness (Billy Zane’s almost unrecognizable fixer is a highlight). Even though some of the plotting is predictable, he darkness that hangs over this series and the tenuous situations help make it an involving crime drama. (Seven one-hour episodes) 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
