Two Black superheroes

Black Adam is from DC Comics with Dwayne Johnson in the lead, while the other film is the sequel to the groundbreaking Marvel hit.

Black Adam Dwayne Johnson stars as the title character in this origin story. It takes a while before he’s actually “revived,” but the anti-hero comes out full of anger and killer rays. This takes place in a fictional country, where he and other superheroes work together to defeat the bad guys. If this is sounding familiar, the plot is pretty much like every other entry in the genre. Johnson creates a steely presence with none of his characteristic wise cracks and not even one raised eyebrow. As for action, there’s actually too much. The film is crammed with fights and destruction and after a while, the repetitive crashing and flying begins to bore. Basically, this is a solid, but completely predictable entry to the genre with nothing exceptional. NOTE: Sit thru the early ending credits for a teaser. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever After the phenomenal artistic and commercial success of the original, it’s always a challenge for a sequel to continue the trajectory. This one extends the story more than anything else. The first portion is devoted to the mourning of the original Black Panther (played by the late Chadwick Boseman). Then, a new civilization poses a threat to Wakanda’s security. (Interestingly, the natives are blue and live underwater…just like the cast in the new Avatar.) Finally, is the grooming and revelation of the new Panther. I had the same observation about the original as I do about this one, “The surprise was how much drama is involved. Sure, there are the requisite action scenes, but there’s a lot of talk about pride, moral responsibility and other lofty subjects.” However, this time there are even fewer action beats and the dazzling art direction continues, but not with much new. Sequels need to surprise in order to maintain the unexpected thrills of the original. Although the dramatic conversations are presented with authority, there’s not as much exciting or innovative this time. 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
