Two comedies from unique perspectives

These shows are both from English-speaking countries and present unique cultural perspectives: One features a female Muslim punk band (yes, you read that right), while the other revolves around a Korean family in Toronto.

KIM’S CONVENIENCE This show launched in Canada in 2016 and has become a worldwide hit, thx to Netflix. It revolves around the titular store that’s run by a Korean couple. Their adult children and several friends round out the primary casts. Sure, some of the humor comes from the parents and their old-country expectations, but there’s plenty of comedy created with the other relationships and situations. In a nod to international appeal, the regular store customers hail from a variety of home countries and cultures. On top of this is a layer of care and affection that adds some sweet emotional moments. All of the actors are good, but the parents (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Jean Yoon) rise above their accents cheap laffs from to create truly appealing and winningly comic portrayals. It must be mentioned that their hot son (Simu Liu) has already been cast as the first Asian actor in the Marvel Universe. (5 seasons with a spin-off series entitled Strays in production) 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)  Netflix link

WE ARE LADYPARTS A group of 5 Muslim women comprise a punk band in modern London (one in a full burka plays the manager). I’m not versed in the various types of religious adherence, but it seems they’re respectfully portraying their culture (even though they delight in being outrageous). The women cover a range to character types, which adds to the richness of the characters. On top of that, it’s genuinely funny with robust energy, plus their songs (all performed by the actors) are fun, including a great rendition of 9 to 5. Despite the comic accomplishments, this show provides a delightful insight into a world that most of us only know from media depictions.
