Both of these Netflix films are based on true stories. The one that’s set in Mexico revolves around a group of orphans, while the South African film addresses child trafficking.

Blue Miracle A man who runs an orphanage in Mexico (Jimmy Gonzales) is faced with closing down unless he can raise a lot of money. As the plot would have it, there’s a big prize fishing tournament in the area and a group of his boys becomes the crew for the crusty captain (Dennis Quaid). There’s a sweet energy with the kids providing a smidgen of personality, but the earnest approach and simple, predictable story might appeal to young audiences and their families. Interestingly, the film is set in Mexico but even the natives speak English with occasional lapses into Spanish, which makes no sense. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5) Netflix link

I Am All Girls A detective trying to crack a South African child-trafficking ring discovers that a vigilante killer is targeting the perpetrators. The subject matter certainly deserves serious treatment, but this effort’s underplayed pacing and sometimes confusing plot hinder the film’s impact. There are some expected tragic moments, but even those consist mainly of the victims looking pitiful. The secondary revenge aspect defies logic and adds little to the tension. A missed opportunity to make an impactful statement about the subject. 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5) Netflix link
