The latest entry into the Halloween franchise has been touted as the last and the new Marvel “special” is a one-off:

Halloween Ends This sequel picks up a few years after the last one (my review). Jamie Lee Curtis is back to lead the search for Michael Meyers. Of course, there has to be a love interest (Rohan S. Campbell & Andi Matichak) even though it goes in a dark direction. One of the primary aspects of a sequel are surprises and this has a few. Also, good kill scenes are vital (pun intended) and the ones here are quick and brutal with some new variations. Director David Gordon Green, who directed the last one, has made this one better. There’s not too much chat and enough action to keep it interesting. Even though there’s not much suspense, the whole endeavor is well made and fully enjoyable for thriller buffs.  4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Werewolf By Night As the Marvel Universe expands, the subjects veer away from superheroes. In this case, a group of monster hunters, including Jack Russell (Gael Garcia Bernal), are assembled to determine who will take the place of a recently-deceassed leader. Thus begins the hide and seek that ends fatally for some of them. This is called a “special” because it’s a one-off show that doesn’t fit into any previous Marvel molds. The production style harkens back to the glory days of monster movies: Shot in dramatically-lit black and white with extreme angles, practical monster effects and heavy-handed music. There are some decent action moments, but this is more a curiosity to be appreciated for its style. 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
