Both of these series have just started their 2nd season. Both were a delightful surprise when they launched last year, emphasizing the dark humor in family relationships. Since they’re produced by Fox, they’re also available on Hulu.
Breeders Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard play the parents. Last season, their 2 kids were very young and this year they lept forward to being 13 and 10. The basic concept is that they love their children, but could sometimes just murder them. This dark concept plays out with delightful interactions, anchored by Freeman cynical father (based on his own experience). Two other sets of breeders, the parents of this couple, also expand the comic potential. While the first season seemed a bit more lighthearted (until the gripping final episodes), this season seems more about conflict than comedy. Still, it’s winningly written and performed. The Moodys Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins are the cantankerous couple who ends up with all 3 of their adult kids at home. The first season started with the Holidays and this one picks up shortly after. Each of the characters has their own story. What makes the show so much fun is the constant clever quips and fun vicious teasing. Of course, Leary is the master of this style and he shines here. Even so, the entire cast is gifted with comic delivery, so it’s constantly entertaining. (4.5 / 5) Fox link
