Movieland opened two films last week that feature gay romances. The first is based on a true story set in Estonia, while the 2nd is a lighthearted French film. Both films are playing thru at least next Thursday.
Firebird This is based on a true story of 2 men who fell in love while serving in the Soviet Army during the Cold War. If discovered, their relationship could result in 5 years of hard labor, so keeping their secret was crucial. The narrative extends beyond their military days, as they grow in different directions, while remaining painfully in love. The 2 actors make their attraction feel real and become even more powerful as their situations become more complex. This film hits all the right targets for a story like this in a relatively straightforward manner. The attractive cast and able direction bolster its appeal. (3 / 5)

Anaïs in Love A frantic young woman rushes everywhere because she’s always late and unprepared. When she meets a much older man at a party, they begin an affair. Later, she becomes attracted to his wife and pursues that fascination. The scenarios develop with interest and the performances are fine, but the younger woman’s character is more frustratingly immature than likeable (which may be the point). There’s a bouncy pace to keep things from getting too serious, but no real comedy. It’s a tasty trifle and not much more. (In French with subtitles) (3 / 5)
