Marvel Studios is developing series around supporting characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s a look at the 2 latest:
Hawkeye Jeremy Renner returns in the title role, but he’s living a quiet country life with his family. Their Holiday trip to NYC not only introduces villainous activity, but pairs him up with a young archer (Hailee Steinfeld). It’s their relationship that makes this series. Her confidence and eagerness drive him crazy, while his gruff reactions are infused with humor. The action scenes aren’t major scale like the movies, but the fights are fun. It’s most enjoyable for the buddy comedy aspects. (6 episodes finishing on 12/22) (4 / 5)
Loki After escaping from Battle of New York in the last Avengers movie, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) breaks off to a new time line, which sends the Time Variance Authority after him. Even with all the MCU lingo, time travel and crazy universes, Hiddleston’s immense talent and likability makes it manageable. Owen Wilson adds his laid-back comic reactions, while Sophia Di Martino shows up as an alternate female Loki. There are some epic scenes with the expected monster battles, but plenty of personal interaction to keep it grounded. Actually, the final episode spends way too much time explaining things in dialogue, so that’s a bit of a letdown. Still, it’s worth a watch if you’re a Marvel fan. (6 one-hour episodes with 2nd season in development) (3.5 / 5)
