These 2 animations are different in every way, except that the pivotal characters are females in both. One is based on a video game, while the other re-imagines Beauty and the Beast.
Arcane The subtitle for this series is League of Legends, because it’s based on the video game. Fortunately, you don’t have to know the game to appreciate this excellent animated series. And even better, this is much better than most game-to-screen adaptations. It’s set in a unique world, part steam punk with elements of Art Deco and other eclectic styles. There are heroes and villains, plus scientists, magic and kids. The most striking aspect is the spectacular art direction: The environments are impressive and intricate. The characters are expertly animated, including subtle expressions. The visual inventiveness is not only cool, but exceptionally beautiful. Since this is an adult series, there are violent encounters, but also moments of lovely emotion. Even if you ignore the story (which is sufficiently involving), this is a spectacular visual treat. This review is based on the 4 of 9 episodes and things don’t really take off til Episode 3. (A second season has already been announced.) (4.5 / 5)
Belle When this film premiered at Cannes, it received a 14-minute standing ovation. I’m not sure why. This re-telling of Beauty and the Beast is located in modern Japan topped with a layer of a meta world, where 5 billion people live with their avatar alter-egos. The story revolves around an introverted young girl, who’s still reeling from a tragedy and escapes into the virtual world. The animation is attractive and especially intricate in the virtual universe. The character creations are rendered in a flat, standard style and the emotions are declarative. At 2 hours, it could use trimming, but the message of empowerment and the lovely title song may resonate with some. (3 / 5)
