Truth Seekers
Nick Frost and Simon Pegg have created some amusing movies that often combine spoofs of several genres (Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz). This latest effort casts Frost as an engineer for an internet provider who’s also an amateur paranormal investigator. He teams up with 2 others for ghostly adventures. Pegg plays his boss and Malcom McDowell is wasted as the grumpy father. The 2 episodes I watched were neither funny nor scary. The Frost/Pegg combo can sometimes work, but this one doesn’t cut it. Thomas Middleditch plays a newly-divorced father (cue the surly teen daughter) who discovers he needs a kidney. Annaleigh Ashford is the ditzy friend who becomes his prime donor. This talented duo certainly knows how to handle comedy and they’re often amusing (in addition to the always delightful Keather Donhue). The show’s creators include longtime TV writer Marco Pennette and monster producer Chuck Lorre (Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory). This automatically adds a level of mass appeal sitcom humor (including a laugh-filled “studio audience”) that keeps the show from appealing to those expecting something more clever. Tossing in TV’s greatest sitcom director James Burrows can only help so much. There’s been one episode so far, but based on the excellent cast, I’m willing to give it a few before abandoning it.
