One woman finds herself snowbound and trapped with a kidnapper, while the other is haunted by the past and the house she occupies.
No Exit (This film is not a reference to the existential play by Jean-Paul Satre.) Havana Rose Liu plays a woman on the way to her hospitalized mother, when she gets sidelined by a blizzard. She takes shelter at a park visitor’s center, where she discovers a kidnapped a girl in a van. Which of the other people is the villain and how will she save her? While the plot is a bit convoluted, once things take off, director Damien Power creates an intriguing thriller that ends up in a surprisingly intense climax. (4 / 5)
The Girl Before (This is created, written, and executively produced by JP Delaney, who wrote the novel.) Gugu Mbatha-Raw can rent a striking, minimalist home IF she can adhere to the rules stipulated by the architect (David Oyelowo). Turns out, there’s a suspicious history of the property that involves another woman with a similar story. This series unfolds at a glacier pace, full of ominous portent, but little payoff. Both of the women look alike and the story ping-pongs between their stories, which adds to the confusion. This might have made a compelling movie, but the extended length just drags things into interminable length and the finale isn’t worth the effort. (Four one-hour episodes) (2.5 / 5)
