Two unhappy housewives

These 2 new TV series feature women with unhappy lives, who find their strength.

Kevin Can F**k Himself This is Annie Murphy’s follow-up to her Emmy-winning role as the daughter in Schitt’s Creek. She opted to go in a different direction every way. In the series’ most interesting angle, it’s shot as 2 different shows: 1. It looks like a typical 3-camera sitcom with a live audience, when she’s with her hubby (Eric Petersen nailing the broad, self-centered TV type). 2. When outside his orbit, the show is shot with only one camera and takes on a darker, more realistic look (no audience). Obviously, the sitcom world is where she pretends to be happy, but the real world is where things go dark. Murphy does OK, but never takes off in the comedy or gets deep in the dark. The concept is the most interesting aspect, but from the first 2 episodes it’s not clear where it’s going and if it’s going to be worth a watch. 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)

Physical Rose Byrne plays an 80’s housewife, who lives in her head (or at least in the voiceover), constantly criticizing herself. She also has an eating disorder. While her self-absorbed spouse is planning to run for political office, she discovers the exhilaration and empowerment of aerobics. This will hopefully take us someplace unique, besides the 80s looks. Byrne is fine in the lead, but the writing often seems forced and the supporting characters aren’t especially interesting. Only the 1st 3 episodes have been released (subsequent ones out every Friday ) and even though the character’s arc is clear from the opening scene, the only thing to watch is how she gets there. At this point, it’s not an especially appealing trip. 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)
