This will inevitably be deemed the gay Sex in the City, primarily because THAT show’s creator Darren Star did this one. (He’s also responsible for 90210 and Emily in Paris). Neil Patrick Harris plays a 40-something who’s dumped by his boyfriend of 17-years. That leaves him to deal with the pain of the breakup, as well as the challenges of being newly single. Parallels to Sex/City include:
– Many scenes showcase New York City landmarks
– He hangs and gets advice with his besties (often over brunch)
– The supporting characters have their own interesting stories
– There’s plenty of sex
– Even some of the music echoes the original soundtrack
Harris brings his full comic charm and dramatic abilities to the lead. The enjoyable supporting cast includes Tisha Campbell as his sassy business partner, Brooks Ashmanskas as his artistic friend and Marcia Gay Harden as the rich client. It takes until ep 3 or 4 before things get truly funny, but then it improves with each installment. There are also a few moments of drama just to season things. Not sure how this will relate to those outside the gay community, but I found the characters and the situations lots of cosmopolitan fun. (8 30-minute eps) (4.5 / 5)
