This film starts with an outdoor photography session that becomes a murder. Thus starts the trail of killings by real-life criminal Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto). Meanwhile, Anna Kendrick shows up as an aspiring actor who ends up as a contestant on “The Dating Game” (yes, it takes place in the 70s with Tony Hale as host in an intentionally bad wig). Turns out that the killer is one of the batchelors. Kendrick’s encounter is ultimately disappointing, but there’s another reason she’s involved…she directed it. The narrative bounces around from the police’s attempt to catch the killer, his continued murders and Kendrick’s story. All the while, there are lots of threatening moments, but never much real tension. Kendrick has an assured hand in creating some involving sequences that help make this story creepy. (2 / 5)
