Two woman-powered films (review)

Both of the major streaming services released movies that centered around a woman’s struggle. They’re both also playing at Movieland.

Pieces of a Woman

When I read that this film starts with a 25-minute labor and delivery (in one impressive continuous shot) and continues by examining the subsequent effects of the family’s loss, I wasn’t eager to see it. But I’m glad I did. It’s one of the most affecting cinematic experiences of the year. The cast is all-around superb. Vanessa Kirby (as the mother) brings brilliant power to her performance and Shia LaBeouf’s quietly virtuoso characterization as the father delivers on his early promise as a great actor. Ellen Burstyn plays the assertive mother and delivers the film’s most moving monologue, while Molly Parker is impressive in her has a small but powerful role as the midwife. The sensitive writing and skillful direction never sink into maudlin clichés, but create an intelligent yet powerfully effective drama.

Herself (review)

Clare Dunne plays a wife who escapes her abusive husband with her two young girls. After struggling with the social services system, she determines to build her own house. It’s clear pretty quickly that determination is the byword here. Dunne’s resolve, despite her desperation drives the narrative. She’s surrounded by a solid supporting cast and an upbeat spirit that, despite the distressing odds, ultimately paints a portrait of a resolute, resilient woman.
