Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story

The true crime series that Ryan Murphy started with Dahmer (my review) continues with this look at the notorious brothers who killed their parents with shotguns. As expected, there are lots of dark moments, but what makes this series most effective is the performances. Cooper Koch (as Eric) and Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Lyle) go deep to create intense characterizations. Add Javier Bardem (father) and Chloe Sevigny (mother) who add more power. Episode 5 is especially impressive because the entire hour is one very slow zoom into Eric’s face. Very compelling and a master class in acting. The series starts to drag by the time they end up in court, which makes sticking it out more challenging. Even so, I’ll borrow a line from my Dahmer review that works here, this series is “a deep dive into darkness that’s also disturbingly fascinating.” (9 one-hour eps) 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
