Boston Strangler

Kiera Knightly plays a Boston reporter relegated to the society desk at a 60s Boston newspaper. When she notices similarities in a string of murders, she pitches the idea and eventually writes the stories that break the case of the titular killer. Much like She Said, which came out last year and heralded the Harvey Weinstein case (my review), this film attempts to make an effective drama about reportage. There are a few fringe moments of the killer’s attacks, but they’re more suggested than violent. Otherwise, it’s Knightly’s character fighting to be heard in the male-dominated newspaper world, while researching the reports and juggling her home life. Much like She Said, the direction lacks much tension and this is more a procedural doc than a tense thriller. 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)
