Male strippers & gigolos

Both of these streaming series revolve around the sexualization of men. The first is a series about the famous male strip club, while the other is a remake of the classic movie.

Welcome to Chippendales Kumail Nanjiani is compelling as an Indian American who’s struggling to find success in the US, until he stumbles upon the idea of hosting a club with male strippers. We’re all familiar with the brand, but this series details the creation of the concept and its development. However, there’s a shady side peering around the edges and Nanjiani makes that clear from the start. Robert Siegel, who most recently wrote Pam and Tommy (my review), again delves into the darkness behind the fame. This review is only based on 4 shows, but I understand that there is a murder. This series is compelling enough to keep my interest until all is revealed (pun intended). Review based on 4 of 8 eps (new ones drop weekly). 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

American Gigolo Jon Bernthal gets his first big role, recreating one that Richard Gere made famous in the movie. This series goes in a different direction. At the start, his character is imprisoned for murder. Once vindicated, he sets out to start his life over and find the real culprit. From the opening scene, Bernthal impresses with his dramatic depth. He’s also incredibly ripped and his body is exposed plenty. The biggest disappointment is the new direction, which omits much of the gritty glamour from the original for this new mystery plot. To make matters worse, the narrative continually switches between timelines from the character’s various ages, which is sometimes confusing and interrupts the dramatic flow. Worth it for Bernthall (and Rosie O’Donnell who plays a cop). Review based on 4 of 8 reviews. 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
