Maya Erskine is having a moment. She’s the female lead in the new Prime Video movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith (my review) and this 2019 romcom was just released on Netflix. Two of her friends who worked on her popular series PEN15 have directed this. She plays “just friends” with her college bud (Jack Quaid). They decide to pair up for the number of weddings they need to attend. Of course, their relationship goes deeper, but not before a few mildly funny moments. After they get romantic, the comedy disappears and the movie becomes predictable and not especially memorable. Erskine provides what little amusement there is, while Quaid proves a mildly-charming beau. The film started with comic promise, but the plot becomes so predictable that there’s nothing left to surprise or even amuse.
